Volunteer Opportunities
“Volunteers are unpaid. Not because they’re worthless, but because they’re PRICELESS”
VOLUNTEER
Intern - Mentor - Volunteer
Our youth have survived the inconsistency of many adults coming in and out of their lives. To propel their healing and protect their ability to form safe, lasting relationships, opportunities to volunteer directly with youth are limited and require clearance with Missouri licensing requirements. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 1 year of service and all applicants must be 21 years of age or older. NOTE: Internships, practicums and mentorships are non-paid positions.
Types of Volunteerism
INDIRECT SERVICE – Indirect volunteers support the work of The Covering House through administrative support and special events. Indirect volunteers do not interact with youth or families. These individuals may advocate for The Covering House in the community, assist in donor development, marketing, in-kind donation coordination, office cleaning, etc.
DIRECT SERVICE - One (1) year of service is required for direct service volunteers. These volunteers work directly with youth on a regularly scheduled basis that is mutually agreed upon. A position description is provided and a volunteer agreement is signed.
MENTORING - KITE [Kids Impacted Through Empowerment] applies trauma-informed programing to mentor relationships. Mentors receive training on the impact of trauma on the lives of young survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking and learn to mitigate the negative impact of trauma on children.
INTERNSHIPS/PRACTICUMS - The Covering House is now accepting practicum and internship applications for Social Work students and practicums for MSW candidates. A 1-year commitment is required.
THE PROCESS
The State of Missouri requires anyone employed, volunteering, mentoring or completing a practicum or internship to be fingerprinted, have a physical exam with TB test, and register with the MO Family Care Safety Registry. The cost for the physical, TB test and fingerprinting is at your expense.
All forms must be completed and submitted with copy of your driver’s license.
For Mentoring, Internships and Practicums a resume must be submitted to hr@thecoveringhouse.org.
There is an interview process to determine where you are needed and where you fit best. Executive Director approval is required for those wishing to work directly with youth.
For each program there is required training that must take place before you can begin your service.
One-Type Service Projects - Visiting groups, churches, corporations, etc. are invited to complete special projects with The Covering House. Groups and individuals working on one-time efforts do not have contact with youth and are exempt from the requirements above. Example projects:
Provide items for celebrations or events
Assist with maintenance or repairs
Painting and/or drywall, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, roofing, HVAC
Serve in lawn care and yard maintenance
Grass mowing, leaf raking, gardening, yard trimming, tree trimming
